Description
  • This collection contains photographs and loose prints taken or collected by Dr Marriott between approximately 1902 and 1923. The photographs are mainly of Hong Kong where Marriott was based, but also cover his journeys into mainland China, South Korea and Japan. They feature scenery, street scenes, places of interest, local people and customs, including Marriott himself and the Peak Hospital where he worked. It has been assumed that the majority of the photos were taken by Marriott, apart from those of the 1906 Hong Kong typhoon which he purchased. The majority of the photos are accompanied by detailed handwritten notes which provide valuable contextual information on Edwardian Hong Kong. This catalogue was produced with support from the National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives
