  • The main part of this collection reflects the hunting exploits of Julian Clough and his brother John Clough during their time in India. The first and largest item is a log book itemising Julian Clough’s involvement with the hunting and shooting of all types of birds and animals from an early age (ref. 2000/008/1). It records extensive details about each season's kills, including Clough’s thoughts about each hunt, and is interweaved with photographs. There is an accompanying bundle of loose photographs recording Clough’s time in India, including his domestic arrangements and activities. There are many images of wild animals and birds which have been shot. The remaining loose photographs in the collection are family shots spanning several generations, mostly unidentified. These include images of Julian and his wife Monica with their 2 young children. Finally there is a bundle of loose papers including random items such as a diary from 1898-1901 written by a member of the Clough family, Clough’s inventory for his hunting trips from around 1928, and a number of used postage stamps from India and Egypt.

  • Richard Julian CLOUGH
  • Richard Julian Clough (known as Julian) was born on 26 September 1904 in Bengal, India as the son of Edmund and Marion Clough. He worked for many years at James Finlay and Co., tea planters and merchants, at one point heading up their office in Calcutta (Kolkata). In 1939 he married Monica Francis and they had 2 children, Juliet (born 1943) and John (born 1945). Monica was born in 1922, also in India, and grew up in Tranvancore where her father ran a tea plantation. Following her marriage to Julian, they lived in India for many years pre- and post- Independence. Julian had a twin brother called John Alfred Clough who served as a High Court judge in Calcutta (Kolkata). Both brothers were very keen on shikar ie hunting, and Julian kept a log book of his activities on the hunting ground. They would regularly attend shooting camps together in the area around Calcutta (Kolkata). In the collection’s photographs, Julian is referred to as RJC and John as JAC. The Cloughs finally returned to the UK in 1953, and moved to Dunblane. Julian continued to work for James Finlay and Co. In later life, Monica became an author and historian, and had several books published eg ‘Field of Thistles: Scotland’s Past and Scotland’s People’, ‘Hartly House, Calcutta’. She died in 1999.
