Films taken in the Gilbert & Ellice Islands, 1967-1970
2001/184/1
These 19 films record many scenes detailing the Mowats' time spent on the Gilbert & Ellice Islands, from their arrival in 1967 to their departure in 1970.
The collection includes extended footage taken in schools and the teacher training college, highlighting many aspects of the teaching process from the classroom to the school yard. Group visits with the students to neighbouring islands are shown including boat trips.
There are also many social occasions where islanders gather to eat and dance. Many aspects of local life have been filmed: collecting coconuts and palm leaves, making 'toddy' from palm branches, fishing, cooking, building houses, and a western-style wedding. The 3 films which have so far been digitised are colourful and vibrant.
