  • This collection consists of 8mm films and photographs, taken or collected by Bart Gifford, and mainly relating to India in the 1930s-1940s. This catalogue was produced with support from the National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives

Biographical history
  • Herbert Bartholomew Gifford (known as Bart) came from Winchester, where his family ran a Corn & Coal Merchants business. He obtained a degree in engineering from Cambridge University, and went to India in the 1930s to work as a railway engineer at Bikaner. He joined the army and served in India during WW2. From the mid-1950s, he worked in Thailand.
