Members of the Uganda Mountain Club set up camp on an expedition to Mount Elgon on the Kenya-Uganda border. West Kenya, 1960.
Original caption: Camp at Elgon roadhead.
Later caption: Posted from Karamoja (to our grief) to Kampala. Work was the administration of lowland Tropical High Forest, and the prosecution and eviction of squatters (foreigners from Ruanda/Urundi) who were nibbling away at the edges of our most valuable forest reserves. We got away from the damp heat of the city at every opportunity. We used no porters, the African in the foreground is Tim Bazarrabusa. An altogether remarkable man who, in spite of coming from a mountain tribe, which would normally supply guides and porters, joined the Mountain Club and climbed mountains for the same reasons as us - because they were there. Very sadly he suffered a fatal "accident" at a roundabout in Kampala in Obote's time.
