These films were taken by Olive and Tommy Morgan during their time in India and East Africa during the 1930s to 1950s. Tommy Morgan worked overseas for Cable & Wireless until the 1950s, when the couple returned to the UK due to his ill health.
The footage records scenes in and near Mumbai (Bombay) in the late 1930s, with beach and urban settings. One clip shows Gandhi walking along the sea-shore with a small group of his supporters.
Later footage was taken in East Africa, mainly showing views of ports and ships at anchor. There are also scenes on-board ship (presumably voyaging between India and East Africa). One film was taken in England where Olive is visiting her family.
Olive Anderson was born on 21 September 1899, and she married Tommy Morgan in June 1932. They lived in India, then East Africa where he worked for Cable & Wireless. Olive Morgan was a singer (mezzo soprano), and a newspaper from 1938 Bombay mentions one of her radio performances. According to the family, during WW2, she was on route to meet Tommy in India when the ship she was on was torpedoed in the Atlantic, and she had to spend 24 hours on a lifeboat until the survivors were picked up by a destroyer.
The Morgans returned to England in the 1950s due to Tommy’s ill health. Olive Morgan died in Worthing at the age of 89 on 5 June 1988.
