Francis Jaekel worked for 27 years with the Nigerian Railways from 1938 as a colonial officer when it was still a Government dept. He became superintendent of railways and retired in the 1970s after almost 30 years of service. He later wrote the History of the Nigerian Railway in 3 volumes, which is the definite history of the railway.
In recognition of his service, in 1998 the former residence of the General Manager and later senior staff rest house was renamed Jaekel House. Built in 1898, the house is an example of classic colonial architecture, and is now a railway museum housing a photographic archive.
