John Small was a pharmacist who travelled to Jamaica in 1850 to join his cousin, Dr Ferguson. Initially this was to help his cousin with his medical practice, however together they started a coconut plantation at the Wentworth Estate near Port Maria. Circa 1876, Small married (Augusta) Eliza Anderson, who was the daughter of Reverend Peter Anderson, a missionary based in Kingston. Together they had 3 children before returning to Dundee around 1888. Their daughter Elizabeth Small married Edmund Hunt Dring.
There are letters written by Small to his family in Scotland, giving details about his life in Jamaica. Also included in this part of the collection are several family photographs and one of Wentworth house.
