This collection consists of a film, various papers, and several objects (eg flag, police cap, and badge), all relating to the Northern Rhodesia Police force.
The film shows footage of a United National Independence Party demonstration at Ndola. Papers include personal items such as identity card and residence permit, and also printed material eg training manuals provided to the police officers.
David John Frederick Buchanan was born in 1934 on a farm near Colchester. After spending 3 years serving with the British Army, he applied for the job of Assistant Inspector with the Northern Rhodesia Police force, where he was to stay until 1966. He was variously posted to Lusaka, Kafue, Broken Hill and Ndola through his time with the force, joined Special Branch, and was promoted to the position of Detective Chief Inspector. He retired in July 1966.
