This ledger contains minutes and correspondence for the Kenya Executive Committee from 1956 - 1966, detailing pivotal events in the history of the British Legion’s presence in East Africa.
It was during this timeframe that Kenya gained independence from Britain, in the year 1963. The minutes belay concerns regarding the Legion’s continuity as Kenya moved towards independence and what activities should be carried out moving forwards. Covered is the transfer of British Legion (Kenya) assets to the London British Legion; and the sale of British Legion property in Kenya from 1964 onwards.
Also of particular interest are minutes detailing the consolidation of the African Section, following on from the debate surrounding its formation in 1946 (ledger 2003/212/1/2/3). There is further discussion on the position of African ex-servicemen on the Executive Committee, and the future of the African Section after independence. Developments discussed or agreed included the formation of the King's African Rifles and East African Forces Old Comrades Association out of the African Section.

1 very large bound volume containing typescript minutes glued onto the pages. The spine has collapsed and become detached from the binding, leaving the pages loose. In some places loose documents have been attached to the pages with pins which have now rusted.
