This ledger contains the minutes of the Benevolent Fund Committee meetings from the years 1933 to 1936,
This committee, alongside numerous sub-committees below it, oversaw the allocation of grants. Included here are extensive lists of names of those who applied for Legion support, a large proportion of whom are women, with a short summary of their circumstances and the outcome. Included are a small number of Indian and African cases, with names attached.
Approximately centre-fold is an index with discussion points in red ink preceding the index, and those in black in succeeding it. The latter part of the ledger covers efforts made within the organisation to expand its spheres of operation, such as the European Children’s Holiday Resort Fund (1936), which sent the children of European servicemen on holiday. Also included are cash statements and account sheets.
Interestingly, the ledger reviews a variety of scenarios in which the organisation handed out benevolence, where it was not seen as warranted or appropriate.
Of particular significance is a meeting where a Mr Silvester proposes the formation of the African Section, which did not come into existence for another 12 years.
