This volume of photographs records a two-year voyage around the coastline of North and South America, passing through the Caribbean and navigating the Panama Canal, undertaken by HMS Dauntless in the early 1930s.
Able Seaman A Hislop provides photographic evidence of the voyage though he may not have taken all the pictures himself. Fortuitously a Commission Book for the 1930-1932 cruise was discovered by the family of Frank Taylor when they were researching their ancestor’s time on HMS Dauntless during WW2, information from which is given here: http://www.frankstaylorfamilyandroyalnavyhistory.net/HMSDauntless/HMSDauntless1930-1932/Part1PacificCruise.html. This has been used to find additional information for these catalogue descriptions. The Commission book refers to the 'eager amateur photographers amongst the crew' so photographs may have been shared and duplicated.
Commission Books came from a naval tradition of producing special commemorative books to record voyages with an informal narrative, and these can include photographs.
HMS Dauntless was a Danae-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy. The ship was built by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Company of Jarrow, and was launched on 10 April 1918. It was used during WW2 then broken up for scrap in 1946. For a period in the 1930s, this vessel was based at the America and West Indies Station which was a command of the Royal Navy, first established in 1745 to counter French ambitions in North America and finally dis-banded in 1956.

Unfortunately, as this item was a purchase, there is no further information held about A Hislop.
