Chanan's folio of images of India was accumulated through the 1990s, on a series of trips to the sub-continent. The collection consists of a series of monochrome panoramic and colour images, which include portraits of a range of people in various parts of India. There is also a mix of striking street and rural scenes. The images were commissioned for the inaugural exhibition held at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum on its opening in 2000.
Noel Chanan (b.1939) studied photography before pursuing a career as a documentary film-maker, with photography, and writings on the early history of photography interwoven. He has published major biographies of two of the pioneer generation: William, Earl of Craven & the Art of Photography (2006) and The Photographer of Penllergare, A Life of John Dillwyn Llewelyn (2013), and his most recent film credit is as producer of Against the Tides (2018), following an open water swimmer on her hazardous journey.
